London-based luxury mattress manufacturer Savoir Beds has launched a limited-edition mattress retailing for $175,000 in conjunction with its sponsorship of “Secrets of the Royal Bedchamber” exhibition at Hampton Court Palace March 27 to Nov. 3. The exhibit explores the bedchamber of the 17th- and 18th-century royal court.
The mattress takes more than 600 hours to craft. It contains horsetail hair from Latin America, as well as cashmere from Mongolia and more than 1,600 miles of silk fiber. Each Royal State Bed will be made to the precise specifications of the customer. The company also offers personal embroidering on the mattress. Only 60 of the crème de la crème mattresses will be produced.
According to a March 19 report by CNBC reporter Robert Frank, the bed, including mattress and box spring, is guaranteed for 25 years. The topper, however, will need to be replaced every five to seven years for a paltry $5,000 to $10,000.
“If you divide $175,000 by 365 nights for 25 years, it comes out to less than $20 per night,” Frank said. “Sounds completely reasonable.”
