ISPA report and forecast show moderate growth; now available to retailers
According to the “2013 Mattress Industry Report of Sales and Trends,” published by the International Sleep Products Association, the mattress industry continued its upward trend in 2013 in unit shipments and wholesale dollar values. U.S. mattress producers shipped nearly 35.9 million units, and wholesale revenues grew to nearly $7 billion, reflecting increases from 2012 levels of 1.2% and 2.4%, respectively. Average unit selling prices for mattresses and foundations increased by 1.2%.
The 2013 report includes additional industry information on contract sales, imports and exports of mattresses, mattress size data and retail price point trends. In addition, this year’s report includes for the first time sales data for motion foundations. Also included is information on mattress sales activity in 60 other countries compiled by CSIL Milano and a market analysis by Mann, Armistead & Epperson Ltd.
Looking ahead, ISPA’s first 2014 “Mattress Industry U.S. Market Forecast” released in April indicates the quantity and value of U.S. mattress shipments will continue moderate unit and value growth in 2014 and 2015.
In 2014, the forecast shows a 2.5% increase in the value of mattress shipments and a 2% increase in units shipped. During 2015, the forecast predicts a 5.5% increase in the value of mattress shipments and a 4% increase in units shipped.
The forecast covers the period through December 2015 and is based in part on an economic analysis prepared by the University of Michigan and input from the ISPA Statistics Committee. It contains economic and market analyses by Jerry Epperson of Mann, Armistead & Epperson Ltd. and Ashraf Abdul Mohsen of Association Research Inc.
