U.S. mattress sales (mattresses and foundations) fell 10.6% in the fourth quarter of 2017, compared with the same quarter in 2016, and the wholesale dollar value of those shipments dropped 4.2%, according to the Bedding Market Quarterly, a quarterly sales report from the International Sleep Products Association (paywall).
The average unit price for mattress sales was a bright spot in the report—up 7.1% in fourth-quarter 2017, compared with the same quarter in the prior year.
Preliminary results for the entire year show unit sales decreased 8.3% and wholesale values declined 4.4% in 2017 over 2016. The AUP rose 4.3% for the year. Final 2017 numbers will be released in ISPA’s annual report later this spring.
The Bedding Market Quarterly reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for 12 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 65.5% of the mattress units shipped and 76.3% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2016.
