Four generations of Diamonstein family have built one of the mattress industry’s most successful, longest-operating manufacturers.
NORFOLK, Va. (January 6, 2025) — Paramount Sleep Company, one of the longest-operating, family-owned mattress manufacturers in the U.S., is kicking off a year-long celebration of its 90th anniversary.
The luxury mattress company, led by third-generation owner and managing director Richard Diamonstein, announced the company’s 2025 plans for special events during each of the four major markets in Las Vegas and High Point, as well as monthly retail promotions with the Paramount 90th Anniversary Special Collection, which commemorates this milestone.
Paramount Sleep Company was founded during the Great Depression by the Comess family in Norfolk, Virginia. Albert Diamonstein began working for the company one year after its founding. In 1952, his son, Arthur, joined, becoming the second generation of Diamonsteins connected to the business. Decades later, Arthur’s sons, Richard and Jamie, entered the business, and the Diamonstein family assumed full ownership of the company in 1986. Jamie left the business in 2015 to pursue other opportunities. Richard Fleck, who had served as senior vice president of sales for 16 years, was then appointed president. Richard Diamonstein assumed several executive roles in addition to serving as a past chairman of the International Sleep Products Assn. and the current chairman of the Mattress Recycling Council. Today, his son, Eric, serves on the company board, making him the fourth generation to join the business.
Beyond its legacy of innovation and exemplary craftsmanship, Paramount Sleep is recognized in the industry for its ongoing commitment to the use of sustainable materials. It was an early adopter of the use of environmentally friendly materials like cotton, wool, exotic fibers and recycled bottle content in upholstery pads. By sourcing materials as close to home as possible and manufacturing all its products in the U.S., the company focuses on shortening shipping distances, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.
Additionally, Paramount Sleep’s state-of-the-art factory in Norfolk utilizes energy-efficient lighting, state-of-the-art conveyor system, and modern machinery for higher quality craftsmanship. Scrap materials from the mattress production process are bailed and sent to be recycled for future use. Diamonstein’s leadership and efforts to develop state recycling programs nationwide earned Paramount Sleep the Mattress Recycling Council’s first Distinguished Service Award.
“Staying true to our core founding values — People, Product, Process, Planet — has guided us for 90 years and through four generations,” said Fleck. “And these values will continue to guide us for generations to come. We will continue to be a good steward to our industry and our community.”
The year-long 90th anniversary celebration will begin at the upcoming Las Vegas Market. Paramount Sleep will welcome guests Jan. 24-30 in showroom C-1595, a shared space with Purecare and Knickerbocker.
