Farmingdale, New York-based mattress and sleep accessories supplier Bedgear is celebrating Earth Day with the launch of an expanded sustainability program. The program aims to break the bedding industry’s cycle of high return rates that generate unnecessary waste and carbon dioxide emissions through product innovation, responsible material sourcing and a global reforestation initiative.
According to a news release, the company has unveiled a new Sustainability page on its website. The page outlines the steps Bedgear is taking to address the environmental challenges created by high return rates and short product lifespans, common in the bedding sector. Bedgear’s strategy focuses on personalized, modular designs and responsible sourcing to reduce mattress returns and comfort exchanges, resulting in less waste, lower carbon emissions, and fewer products in landfills.
“Bedgear ‘s dedication to sustainability is not just about protecting the planet but empowering our customers to make mindful choices about their sleep and environmental impact,” said Bedgear Founder and CEO Eugene Alletto. “With the High Point Market approaching, we are excited to share our progress with industry partners and showcase how our products are designed with sustainability in mind.”

Company officials said the cornerstone of Bedgear’s sustainable approach is the engineering of modular, customizable products designed to fit individual sleep needs and extend product lifespan with materials that reduce waste and conserve energy. For example, Many of Bedgear’s Performance pillows feature removable, machine-washable covers made from hydrophobic materials that require less water and energy to clean. The company’s modular M3 Performance mattress allows sleepers to adjust comfort preferences without replacing the entire mattress. The M3’s interchangeable, recyclable Independent Suspension units can also be personalized before and after purchase, further extending the mattress’s usable life and diverting waste from landfills.
More than 50% of the materials used in Bedgear’s Performance Pillows are sourced from recycled content. Each pillow upcycles an average of 35 plastic bottles, transforming them into recycled polyester used in Bedgear’s patented fiber blend. According to Bedgear, this process turns “waste into comfort” by diverting approximately 13 million plastic bottles from landfills or waterways annually and reducing carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin polyester.
Through its Plant-A-Tree program, Bedgear funds the planting of one mangrove tree in Kenya or Madagascar with every online order placed. According to company officials, mangrove trees are “nature’s powerful carbon sink” — one mangrove tree can absorb and store up to 680 pounds of carbon dioxide in its roots deep beneath the ocean floor over its more-than 25-year lifespan. Since the program’s inception, Bedgear has planted 54,837 trees, offsetting an estimated 16,999 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The Plant-A-Tree program was recently expanded to include online orders placed in Australia, the news release said.
“Sustainability is not a destination — it’s a daily commitment to doing better,” Alletto said. “At Bedgear, we believe innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. As we grow, so does our determination to shape a future where sleep and environmental care are one and the same.”
