What’s Keeping Americans Up at Night?

U.S. News & World Report releases its 2024 Sleep Habits Survey.

2024 Sleep Habits Survey

New York-based media company U.S. News & World Report recently revealed the findings of its 2024 Sleep Habits Survey, which polled 1,200 American adults on their sleep habits.

For the third year in a row, the cost of living is the primary concern keeping Americans awake at night. In 2023, the next two most popular sleep interrupters were Covid-19 and gun violence in America, but in 2024, gun violence moved up to the second spot, followed by the 2024 presidential election, which has kept one in three Americans (31%) up at night.

Stress, in general, caused by internal worries and external events, had a large impact with three in four Americans (74%) stating that the emotion has affected their sleep. In the survey, two-thirds of American adults (66%) report not feeling well-rested, either only once or twice a week (28%), a few times per month (16%) or rarely or never (22%). Just 9% reported waking up feeling well-rested every day.

Since the last survey, Americans seem to have experienced an increase in certain sleep preferences, with 35% preferring to sleep in a separate bed from their partner at night (up 2% from 2023) and 44% of respondents preferring not to share a comforter (a rise of 3% from 2023).

“‘Go to bed; you’ll feel better tomorrow’ is the human version of ‘Did you try turning it off and on again?’”

Also, for the third year in a row, Americans reported their worst sleep habit was going to bed at different times each night. The second most widely self-reported bad habit was screen time in bed. According to the survey, half of Americans limit it before bed and the other half don’t impose any restrictions upon themselves. Speaking of screen time, nearly half of Americans (46%) prefer sleeping with the television on.

Although Americans face many challenges when it comes to a good night’s sleep, it’s imperative to find ways to help your customers get quality sleep, starting with the proper mattress and accessories.
