Gino Marcello, president and founder of Sleep City, a family-owned mattress retailer founded in 1997 in Rochester, New York, said his decision to add Gold Bond two-sided mattresses to his three showroom floors did more than boost sales: it “saved our business.”

Marcello said that what began as a niche offering for the retailer now accounts for more than half of Sleep City’s mattress sales and the category continues to grow. “Since the introduction of the model on our floors nearly five years ago, Gold Bond’s two-sided mattresses have accounted for nearly 60 percent of our overall sales. It has been a game-changer adding them to our floor and it has candidly saved our business,” Marcello said. “We get a lot of customers through our doors that are frustrated by their last mattress not even lasting five years, and when we show them the longer-lasting, two-sided options, they get it immediately.”

According to Marcello, Gold Bond’s two-sided mattresses are longer-lasting because of the high coil counts and the quality raw materials used in their construction. The two-sided story resonates with older shoppers who remember the durability of their parents’ and grandparents’ two-sided mattresses, as well as younger consumers looking for more sustainable options. “The new generation of shoppers are seeking long-term savings, and they care about reducing waste, which is why two-sided mattresses appeal to them,” Marcello said.

With nearly a dozen Gold Bond two-sided mattresses on the floor, top-selling models at Sleep City include Gold Bond’s Buckingham, Venice and Kensington models. The mattresses combine lasting support with comfort features that today’s consumers expect, with firm, plush and pillowtop comfort options and prices ranging from $599 to $2,500, according to a news release.

“Now more than ever, consumers are searching for real value,” said Bob Naboicheck, CEO of Gold Bond, based in Hartford, Connecticut. “Sleep City is the only retailer in Rochester that carries two-sided mattresses, and while business is soft for a lot of independent retailers across the country this summer, they are standing out among major players in their marketplace — enjoying repeat and referral business because they are heavily promoting a brand they can stand behind, with a unique story that is exclusive to them. It is a privilege for us to work with Gino and the Sleep City team and we are excited to continue to share their story.”
