Make Dorm-Room Bedding Easier to Buy

The National Retail Federation’s 2026 back-to-school survey found that college students and their families expect to spend an average of $194 on dorm or apartment furnishings, totaling $14 billion across the category. Deloitte’s 2026 back-to-school survey also found that many parents are value-seeking and moving purchases closer to the start of school.

For mattress retailers, the opportunity is simple: help shoppers turn a rushed dorm or apartment purchase into a more complete sleep setup.

Start with the bed size

For many college shoppers, the first point of confusion is fit. Twin XL mattresses are common in dorm rooms, but shoppers may still need help matching toppers, protectors, sheets, pillows, and bedding layers to the right size.

Clear product information matters online, in the store, and in follow-up communication. A missed size detail can turn an easy seasonal purchase into a return, exchange, or frustrated move-in day.

Think beyond the mattress

Dorm shoppers may not be buying a full mattress. They may be trying to make an existing mattress more comfortable, protect a bed they do not own, or build a sleep setup for a small room.

That makes accessories especially relevant. Toppers, pillows, protectors, sheets, and comforters can help shoppers solve practical problems without making the purchase feel larger than it needs to be.

Make timing easy

Back-to-campus buying often comes with a deadline. Shoppers may need to know what is in stock, what can ship quickly, what can be picked up locally, and what should arrive before move-in.

Retailers do not need to overcomplicate the message. A clear dorm-room sleep setup can answer the basic questions quickly: Will it fit? Will it be comfortable? Will it be protected? Will it arrive in time?
