“What’s love got to do with it?” sang Tina Turner on her 1984 album Private Dancer. As it turns out it, it has a quite a bit to do with sleep.
Since 1996, the Better Sleep Council has conducted research to understand and track changes in consumer attitudes toward sleep and health, and their mattress purchasing decision-making. The BSC recently released results from a new online survey, revealing consumers’ attitudes about Valentine’s Day.

The online survey was conducted from Jan. 22 to Jan. 27 and included 503 respondents ages 18 and older who are residents of the United States. Three in 10 US adults say Valentine’s Day is extremely or very important to them.
Over half (55%) of US adults view Valentine’s Day as a special occasion to celebrate romantic relationships. More US adults plan to do something special for someone else on Valentine’s Day than expect someone to do something special for them (60% vs. 45%)
According to the report, nearly a quarter (23%) of US adults think the most romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day is going out for an intimate dinner or date night. This dovetails with another insight from the report that the most popular love language (how one expresses and experiences emotional affection in relationships) is quality time, selected by 35% of US adults.
Sleep is also important to Valentine’s Day plans. 34% of respondents said sleep is “highly important,” a sentiment felt even more strongly by younger adults between the ages of 18 to 44. For over a quarter (28%) of US adults, the ultimate Valentine’s Day bedroom upgrade would be romantic decor, while 1 in 4 would prefer a cozy setup for watching movies and 2 in 10 would opt for a comfortable new mattress.
If your customers mention plans to stay in on Valentine’s Day, try selling them some accessories to make their bedroom into a cozy sanctuary. Or better yet, a new mattress.
