Hi, I’m Kathryn Greene. I’m here today with Mike James from Kingsdown.
Mike James
We’re thrilled that you’re here, and we have so much to show you today. This is a fantastic cover we got from Culp. We’re able to get in two different styles. The top itself is built with latex and alpaca cotton. Fully reversible. Mattress itself has an awesome coil system. Also has cotton and alpaca, fully tuffted, really is a show stopper with margin.
Kathryn Greene
Okay, we are in the Kingsdown front window. Tell me a little bit about this collection.
Mike James
Well, this collection is really inspired by the latest trends in women’s clothing. We’re able to locate this textured material, cut it and use it as mattress tape. We combined it with a beautiful Tencel cover, the best specification in our vintage collection.
Kathryn Greene
And I love the color palette of this.
Mike James
We have had, you know, items on our window in the past that were more shocking than sellable. This is absolutely sellable and totally current.
Kathryn Greene
In the past, the Vintage collection has been a little bit more edgy. Now it’s a little bit softer. Walk me through why that is.
Mike James
We really want to bring some texture and softness to this collection. So this sort of look to me, I thought, was something that we need to graduate to make it look a little more relaxed, a little more textured. I think we really accomplished that with the color palette we have in this room.
Kathryn Greene
All right, so where are we now? What are we checking out?
Mike James
Well, we’re looking at the Passions collection, which really is a staple in our line. For us, this line is very, very important. It has a fantastic coil system that we’re showcasing at this show: our new wave coil. It has a very fashion-forward look.
Kathryn Greene
All right. And I noticed, looking at these, the ticking on these beds is a little lighter. We come over here; it’s a little darker. What does that mean?
Mike James
Yeah. Great observation. So, our entry-level of Passions is the darker version. Our wraparound Passions is lighter. We did so so that when we marry the lower-end Passions with the higher-end Passions on one floor, there is cohesiveness in that look. Again, a fashion-forward look with a fantastic specification at margins that retailers can really make a lot of money on.
Kathryn Greene
Okay. And now, here in this room, we have this stunning floral background that matches the beds. Tell me a little bit about where this pattern came from.
Mike James
So this actually was a pocket square that I bought this summer. I thought it would be cool again to take the floral cover and the entry, which is a more entry-level luxury, and graduate it into a lighter and higher-end version of Passions—some of the other updates we made in this line. We now foam encased the entire line.
It really has fantastic construction, but most importantly, it has an amazing feel.
Kathryn Greene
Well, I can see why it’s called Prime. Tell me about where we are and what we’re about to go into.
Mike James
Well, welcome to SleepLab. Thank you. For us, this is an opportunity that we never really get. It’s to lift the hood up on what we do and how we develop products. I’ll show you around.
Kathryn Greene
All right, let’s do it.
Mike James
So we’ll start with this new coil system called the Wave. Ideally, we have more support in the center third, where we need it the most in the lower part of our back. And softer coils here in the shoulder area. The transition from firmer to softer is very slight. You don’t feel it’s not a rigid surface in the bed.
And we’re really able to get a wonderful feel throughout the line. This is probably my favorite part of the business. My wife and I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at magazines, following fashion, following trends. So, we like to take current looks and use them to develop all of our lines.
Kathryn Greene
So inspiration really comes from everywhere.
Mike James
Everywhere. This is our ICSA. So, in a nutshell, we actually have the ICSA machine, which measures the support value of every bed we make. Every bed is measured before it leaves and packaged to ensure that the value it represents matches the original value of the original sample. We get far less returns.
We have more happy customers every single day because we’re taking that extra step within the building to ship exactly what we intended to show.
Kathryn Greene
Style and substance, right? That’s what they say. All right, so we know all about Kingsdown. But not everyone knows. You know, all the private label work that Kingsdown does. Tell me a little bit about these.
Mike James
Yeah, these are just some of the projects that we’ve been able to develop with retailers around North America. For us, this is an exciting opportunity to not only feature the logo of the company we’re dealing with but to create exclusive products based on the needs of a specific retailer.
Kathryn Greene
