What Customers Say vs. What They (Might) Really Mean

Four assumptions that can send mattress shoppers down the wrong path

Every mattress shopper walks into the showroom with preconceived ideas:

“I need a firm mattress.”

“I sleep hot.”

“All mattresses are the same.”

Those statements are valuable, but they’re just the beginning of the conversation. A shopper’s first assumption is usually shaped by past experience or advice they’ve received. By asking a few thoughtful follow-up questions, retail sales associates can uncover the real need behind the purchase and recommend products with greater confidence.

1. “I need a firm mattress.”

What they might mean: “My current mattress isn’t supporting me the way I need it to.”

Many shoppers use “firm” and “supportive” interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. The Casper-Gallup “State of Sleep in America 2022 Report” found that mattress comfort and satisfaction are closely tied to sleep quality. The goal isn’t finding the firmest mattress—it’s finding the right combination of comfort and support.

Dig deeper: “What isn’t your current mattress doing that you’d like your new one to do?”

2. “I sleep hot.”

What they might mean: “Something is making me uncomfortable during the night.”
In their review “Sleep and Thermoregulation,” researchers Edward C. Harding, Nicholas P. Franks, and William Wisden explain that body temperature plays a critical role in sleep. Bedding, room temperature, sleepwear, and mattress construction can all contribute.

Dig deeper: “When do you notice you’re getting too warm—right away, or later in the night?”

3. “This one feels great.”

What they might mean: “This is my first impression.”

A 2024 review of touch research by Aradhna Krishna, Andrea Webb Luangrath, and Joann Peck found that physical interaction is one of the primary ways consumers evaluate products where feel is central to quality.

Dig deeper: “Let’s compare this one with another model and spend a couple of minutes in your normal sleep position.”

4. “I don’t want to spend a lot, because all mattresses are basically the same.”

What they might mean: “I don’t understand what I’m paying for.”

A 2025 Deloitte consumer report found shoppers are increasingly focused on getting “more value for the price,” rather than simply paying less. Explaining how materials and construction affect comfort, durability, and performance helps shoppers understand those differences.

Dig deeper: “Would it help if I showed you what changes as you move from this model to the next?”

A customer’s first statement is rarely the whole story. By asking thoughtful follow-up questions instead of accepting assumptions at face value, RSAs can uncover the needs behind the purchase and help shoppers choose a mattress with greater confidence.
