Houston-based retailer Mattress Firm has named Tom Polit as vice president of merchandising strategy, and David Cartlidge as vice president of product and innovation.
Polit began his career on the Sleepys sales floor in Long Island, New York. After a few years in stores, he was offered a position as a merchandising coordinator, which led him to becoming a buyer on the merchandising team.
In his nearly 19 years at Mattress Firm, Polit has worked in both finance — where he was able to hone his analytics skills — and merchandising, where he helped transform the team. Polit created crucial processes and strategies, holding the team accountable for its financials, according to a news release.
Cartlidge has worked with Mattress Firm for two years. But during his short tenure, he’s made a big impact: One of his biggest successes was overseeing the development and launch of Sleepy’s Hybrid and Beautyrest PressureSmart, company officials said. He also played a major role in new contract negotiations with key suppliers.
Prior to joining the company, Cartlidge spent more than 12 years in the bedding industry, working at both Art Van Furniture and Corsicana Mattress Co. in various roles including sales, merchandising and product.
