Piper Sandler Reports April Sales As ‘Surprisingly Strong’

Piper Sandler, an investment bank and financial services firm based in Minneapolis, released the results of its April mattress retailer survey. According to the report, “April sales were not only an improvement from February and March, but also were one of the strongest months in the last three years.”

Initial projections predicted a downturn, so April sales were somewhat surprising—up 5.1 percent and 5.0 percent on a mean and median basis, respectively.

Piper Sandler also noted that strength in April was driven by “an impressive improvement in unit growth: down 0.1 percent year over year.” This marked the best improvement in unit growth since June 2021, further highlighting April’s ‘surprisingly strong’ sales performance.

Looking ahead, retailers’ average forecast for the second quarter is higher than it was one month ago, now projected to be up 5.6 percent and 5.0 percent year over year on a mean and median basis. The unexpectedly strong sales figures could influence these projections.

As for Memorial Day weekend—typically one of the biggest holidays for mattress sales—retailers expect sales to rise 6 percent and 5 percent year over year on a mean and median basis, potentially building on April’s ‘surprisingly strong’ momentum.
