MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Rosenthal Contemporary Interiors, one of the oldest furniture retailers in Minnesota, has begun total liquidation after 128 years as a family-owned and operated business.

Rosenthal Contemporary Interior’s going-out-of-business sale started November 9 and will continue until all inventory is liquidated at both locations: 22 N. 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis and 13153 Ridgedale Dr. in Minnetonka. The Minneapolis building is for sale and interested parties may contact Joe Lebewitz at (612) 296-1893.

Leading furniture promotional sales specialists Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) is handling all liquidation details and events across the two stores.

“There is a proud heritage of quality and service in this century-old business, and we’re honored to help the Rosenthal family preserve that legacy as we close out this business of 128 years,” said Tom Liddell, PFP sr. vice president.

Rosenthal Contemporary Interiors began in 1895 as Rosenthal Furniture when Aaron and Rose Rosenthal, along with their son Harold, opened their mom-and-pop discount furniture store. Harold continued the lineage of retail excellence by passing ownership to his children and eventually to his granddaughter Rosie in the late 1980’s.

Rosie shared ownership of Rosenthal Furniture with her cousin, Scott, up until 1999 when she bought out his portion and gained full ownership. It was at this point that Rosie’s strategic vision began to take the company in a new direction with a focus on contemporary, luxury products. After joining the Contemporary Design Group as the sole Minnesota member of the buying group at that time, she officially changed the name of the company in 2017 to Rosenthal Contemporary Interiors further solidifying the retailer as an expert in luxury design.

Through 128 years of the family business, the Rosenthals proved their fortitude and resilience through two economic recessions as well as a fire and flood at their flagship store in downtown Minneapolis. Six years ago, the store underwent an impressive six-figure renovation transforming it into the upscale space it is today.
