In a July YouGov survey of 7,559 adults, 20% said one pet typically shares the bed, 7% said two pets do, and another 3% said three or more do. Those sleepers are part of a much larger pet-owning population: The American Pet Products Association reports that 95 million U.S. households owned at least one pet in 2025.
Those numbers add useful context to ordinary questions about mattress size, usable space, bedding care, and protection.
The pros and cons of sleeping with pets are a separate conversation. The newer data points to something simpler: For many people, pets are already part of the sleep setup.
Size Can Feel Different With a Pet
A mattress that sounds roomy on paper may feel different once a dog or cat regularly claims part of it. Knowing a pet regularly shares the bed can add context when shoppers talk about moving up in size, wanting more usable space, or sharing the bed with a partner. The pet may not be the reason for the purchase, but it can be part of how the bed is actually used every night.
Protection Gets More Practical
Pets also bring fur, paws, claws, occasional accidents, and more frequent laundering into the equation.
Protectors and washable bedding can make sense for reasons that are immediately familiar, especially when the shopper already knows the pet is going to be on the bed.
